Have you noticed DDR5 memory prices keep going up lately?
You're not imagining it. DDR5 has become noticeably more expensive over the past few years, and AI is one of the biggest reasons why.
As AI continues to grow, data centers and AI servers need more high-capacity, high-bandwidth memory than ever before. Starting in the second half of 2025, major memory manufacturers began shifting more of their production toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and server memory to keep up with demand.
So, what does that have to do with the DDR5 memory in your PC?
Even though HBM and consumer DDR5 memory are different products, they both rely on DRAM chips. When manufacturers prioritize production for hyperscale companies and the more profitable AI and server markets, fewer resources are available for consumer memory. As a result, the supply of DDR5 and even DDR4 becomes tighter, pushing prices even higher.
Of course, AI isn't the only factor affecting memory prices.
Production capacity, inventory levels, consumer demand, and even changes across the global supply chain can all influence pricing. So even if prices begin to stabilize, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll quickly return to previous lows.
For now, many industry experts believe consumer DDR5 supply will likely remain tight as AI infrastructure and data center investments continue to grow. That said, future prices will still depend on market demand, inventory levels, and production capacity, making it difficult to predict exactly when prices might come back down.
With DDR5 prices continuing to rise, this is probably the question everyone is asking.
The answer really depends on what you need.
If your current PC still handles everyday tasks, gaming, and entertainment without any issues, and you don't plan to build or upgrade your system anytime soon, there's no need to rush. Memory prices naturally fluctuate with market conditions and promotions, so waiting a little longer could still be a reasonable option.
On the other hand, if you're constantly running out of memory, experiencing game stuttering, struggling with multitasking, or dealing with applications that frequently crash, your current memory capacity may no longer be enough. In that case, upgrading now will likely make a much bigger difference than waiting for prices to drop.
The same goes for anyone planning a new PC build, upgrading to a new platform, or using memory-intensive applications for work or content creation. It's almost impossible to predict the lowest price, and delaying your upgrade could end up costing you more in productivity and overall performance.

At the end of the day, your upgrade timing should depend on your needs, not the market.
If you don't need more memory right now, it's perfectly fine to keep an eye on prices. But if your current RAM is already limiting your experience, or you're planning a new build in the near future, waiting for the "perfect" price may not be the best decision.
Looking for the lowest price sounds great, but choosing the right memory at the right time is what really matters.
